Gambling will soon be possible on Delta airplanes.

Delta Airlines made headlines at CES in Las Vegas with a new partnership announcement with DraftKings, a major player in the sports betting industry.

While specifics aren’t clear, Delta's CEO Ed Bastian hinted at integrating gaming into the Delta Sync experience, potentially allowing passengers to engage in fantasy sports or other gaming activities during flights.

This collaboration could expand on Delta's existing entertainment offerings but stops short of legal gambling at this stage.

One significant hurdle remains: gambling on commercial flights is currently illegal in the U.S. Despite this, sports betting has become a booming industry, with $10.5 billion wagered during last year’s Super Bowl and February alone, according to the American Gaming Association.

Airlines like Delta likely see an opportunity to capitalize on this trend, while casinos and other gambling entities might resist any federal law changes enabling inflight betting.

Speculation about how Delta and DraftKings will proceed includes possibilities like seatback games using virtual currency or even SkyMiles as a betting medium.

However, turning inflight gambling into reality would require overcoming significant legal and regulatory barriers, potentially sparking a showdown between powerful lobbying groups in Congress.

BETTING ON FIRES

The question is: should users be allowed to actively gamble on public disasters?

Polymarket, a blockchain-based prediction platform, has faced criticism for allowing users to bet on California wildfires that have devastated communities, killing five and displacing over 100,000 people.

Users have wagered on outcomes like whether the fires will spread to 80,000 acres, with some pools exceeding $100,000.

These predictions, made with cryptocurrency, have sparked outrage, with critics condemning the platform for profiting from tragedy.

The wildfires have already destroyed over 17,000 acres and 2,000 homes, with insured damages expected to exceed $8 billion.

Many Californians face rebuilding without insurance after major carriers exited the market. Polymarket defends its fee-free wildfire markets as tools for providing real-time data, claiming it aims to improve accountability in predictions by tying outcomes to financial stakes.

While the platform has gained popularity for forecasting global events, its wildfire markets highlight ethical concerns.

Critics argue it crosses the line into exploitation, despite Polymarket’s insistence that it doesn’t profit from these bets.
