(Which he claims was accidental: “Ice was bad today. I fell.” Classic.)

What followed was pure hockey history. The game stopped for a 25-minute ceremony. Gretzky, the man he passed, was there — just like Gordie Howe had been there for Gretzky in 1994.

Teammates mobbed him. His family was on the ice.

A tribute video played, and icons like LeBron, Jordan, Federer, Simone Biles, and Crosby sent congrats. The moment was bigger than hockey.

Ovechkin’s run to the top wasn’t easy. He broke his fibula mid-season — the first broken bone of his career — and returned just after Christmas scoring in back-to-back games like nothing happened.

He’s done it all his way, too: Coke bottles on the bench, spicy Italian Subs before flights, chicken parm before home games, and legendary consistency on the power play.

What’s even more rare is how beloved he is around the league. Rivals and rookies alike line up for stick swaps.

Teammates rave about his leadership and energy.

Even Crosby — his longtime nemesis — got emotional reflecting on what Ovi’s milestone means to the sport.

If Ovechkin plays one more season, projections say he could finish with 937 goals.

Auston Matthews would need 11 full seasons at his current pace to catch him. McDavid and others? 14 or more.

Whether anyone ever catches him or not, this record — and this moment — belongs to Ovi.
